Reporting Fish Kills

Reporting Fish Kills

  1. -If you come across a patch of dead fish while paddling the Occoquan Water Trail, please report it.  Here’s how:

DEQ Northern Regional Office Front Desk 703-583-3800
Mark Miller Pollution Response Coord Direct Line 703-583-3864

The two numbers above can be used during regular business hours of 0815-1700hrs Mon-Fri

For afterhours & weekends please contact the Virginia Dept. of Emergency Management-Emergency Operations Center (VDEM-EOC) at 1-800-468-8892.  Also, if during regular business hours you can not get through to the DEQ office please contact the VDEM-EOC.

Finally, the DEQ has an online reporting form at, http://www.deq.state.va.us/prep/ go to this link and click on “make a report” on the left side of the web page.  Then just read though the info and under item 2 click on “Pollution Reporting Form”

Also, if you suspect a fish kill is related to a possible dumping of material, hazardous or otherwise, I would also suggest contacting local emergency officials (the fire dept in most cases) for a response.
